The Apple AirTag offers precise tracking for Apple households, best for iPhone owners. Rated 4.8 out of 5 across 47,552 user ratings. The main drawback: there is no built-in way to attach an AirTag to anything. We scored it 4.8 out of 5.

TL;DRThe Short Answer: Is the Apple AirTag Worth It?

Buy a tracker and you still need a network dense enough to find your things quickly. AirTag solves that by turning nearby iPhones into relays: drop one in a suitcase or a wallet and Apple's Find My network reports it back, with Precision Finding closing the last few feet on supported iPhones. Setup takes seconds and it reliably turns up misplaced keys and luggage, though updates can be slow where few Apple devices pass by. It suits Apple households that lose track of the same items often and are willing to buy a holder for the tag itself.

NoFussDeal rates the Apple AirTag 4.8 out of 5 at $79.98. Last updated September 26, 2026.

What Stands Out

  1. Ultra Wideband Precision Finding gives on-screen direction and distance on select iPhone models, so finding a tag is guided rather than guessed
  2. The Find My network locates AirTags anywhere hundreds of millions of Apple devices pass, not just at home or in the car
  3. The battery is a replaceable CR2032 that Apple says lasts over a year, so the tag isn't disposable once it runs down
  4. IP67 water and dust resistance means everyday splashes and dust don't put the tag at risk
  5. One-tap setup pairs the tag with an iPhone or iPad and it syncs across every device on the same Apple ID

Strengths and Drawbacks

What works

  • One-tap setup pairs in seconds with an iPhone or iPad and syncs across every device signed into the same Apple ID
  • Precision Finding gives a direction and distance on supported iPhones, turning a lost item into a guided search instead of guesswork
  • The Find My network works anywhere Apple devices pass by, with no subscription fee required
  • The CR2032 battery is replaceable and lasts over a year, so the tag isn't disposable when it runs down
  • IP67 water and dust resistance means everyday splashes and dust don't put the tag at risk
  • Works with Siri and the Find My app for a genuinely joined-up Apple experience
  • Buying four at once covers the common set (keys, wallet, luggage, car) and works out better value than single tags

What does not

  • There is no built-in way to attach an AirTag to anything, so a holder or keychain accessory is a separate purchase
  • It only works with iPhones and iPads; Android users cannot own or track one
  • Location updates can be slow or stale where few Apple devices pass by, such as quiet residential streets
  • Anti-stalking protections mean a shared AirTag will eventually alert whoever is carrying it, which rules out tracking a pet or a person without their knowledge
  • The built-in speaker is meant for nearby searching, not for finding something across a loud room or busy street

Not a GPS Tracker: How the Find My Network Actually Works

Connectivity Bluetooth Close-range Precision Finding, Ultra Wideband Network Hundreds of millions of Apple devices

The most common misunderstanding about AirTag is that it contains a GPS receiver and a cellular connection. It contains neither. An AirTag is a Bluetooth beacon: it broadcasts a rotating, encrypted identifier and nothing more. What makes it useful is the other half of the system, the hundreds of millions of iPhones, iPads and Macs in ordinary use around the world. When any of those devices passes near your AirTag, it anonymously notes the location and relays it to Apple, and you see the result in the Find My app. The tag never knows where it is; the crowd does. That is also why a tag can look stuck in a quiet area and then jump to a fresh position within minutes once it reaches a busier street. The whole system is designed so the strangers helping you never learn anything: the identifier rotates, the location report is end-to-end encrypted, and Apple cannot see who found what.

Apple Only, and No Way to Attach It

Requires iPhone or iPad Attachment None included Item Weight 11.07 g

Two practical limitations decide whether this is the right purchase: this is an Apple-only product in a stricter sense than most accessories, and an AirTag as supplied cannot be attached to anything. Both are covered in the questions below, and both are worth reading before ordering. Sharing helps within the Apple world: an AirTag can be shared with up to five people, so a set of car keys or a suitcase that several family members use can be found by any of them, which is a well-judged addition. The exception to the attachment problem is anything with a pocket: a wallet, a suitcase lining, a laptop bag or a glovebox needs no accessory at all, and at 11 grams and roughly the size of a coin the tag disappears into them. Children's backpacks, lunch bags and pencil cases are an obvious fit for the same reason.

The Battery: Replaceable and Long-Lasting

Battery CR2032, user-replaceable Batteries included 4 (one per tag) Warranty Apple 1 year limited

Each AirTag runs on a single CR2032 coin cell, and the four-pack includes four, one per tag. This is a genuine design strength rather than a compromise. A tracker with a sealed, non-replaceable battery is disposable; when the cell dies, so does the product. A CR2032 costs very little, is sold everywhere, and is changed by pressing the stainless back down and twisting it anticlockwise. Apple says a cell lasts over a year, and your iPhone will notify you when one is running low, so there is no need to track it yourself. The flip side is that nothing here is rechargeable: expect to buy coin cells now and then rather than plugging the tags in. There is a safety point about these cells that every buyer with small children needs, and it has its own question below.

Lost Mode and the Verdict

Lost Mode Automatic network alert NFC tap Works with Android too Sharing Up to 5 people per tag

Lost Mode turns a tracker into a genuine recovery tool, and it is worth turning on before you need it. Enable it and you are notified automatically the moment the tag is detected anywhere on the Find My network, and anyone who finds the item, on iPhone or NFC-capable Android, can tap it to see a message and a contact number you have chosen. That is the part people miss: a stranger who finds your bag does not need an Apple device to help you get it back. Apple also lets you share an AirTag's location with a third party such as an airline, a genuinely useful addition for delayed luggage. Taken together, the AirTag is well made, simple to set up and dependable at finding things, and its softer spots, how precise a fix is and how quickly it arrives, come down to how many other Apple devices are nearby. Buying four at once covers the obvious set, keys, wallet, suitcase and car, with no spare needed. Just budget for the holders separately.

How We Scored It

Based on
The manufacturer's published specifications and the product's live Amazon listing.
Owner rating
4.8 out of 5 on Amazon, recorded September 26, 2026
How we score
We score each thing that comes up most in owner feedback on the Apple AirTag. Eight things come up most in owner feedback: five draw praise and three split opinion. Its ratings average 4.8 stars (88% five stars, 8% four, 2% three and 2% one or two), so every score starts at 96, that average on a 100 point scale. Where opinion is split, we take off 6. Where it draws mostly complaints, we take off 12. Then we read six owner reviews in full (every one we found gave it four or five stars) and move the score up to 5 points either way depending on how the owners who mention it rated the product. Our overall score starts from the same 4.8 star average and loses 0.1 for each thing that draws mostly complaints, with 0.1 more when at least a tenth of ratings are one star, never more than 0.3 in all. Nothing comes off here, so it stays at 4.8. Read our editorial standards

Setting It Up

  1. Remove Battery Tab

Pull the white plastic tab from the AirTag to activate the battery. The built-in speaker chimes to confirm it's powered on and ready to pair.

  2. Enable Bluetooth and Sign In

Make sure the iPhone or iPad has Bluetooth on and is signed into iCloud, with an active internet connection so the AirTag can register on the Find My network.

  3. Initiate Proximity Pairing

Hold the AirTag close to the iPhone. A pairing card appears automatically; tap Connect to begin setup.

  4. Assign Name and Register

Pick an item category such as Keys, Wallet, Backpack or Luggage, or give it a custom name, choose an icon, and continue to register it to your Apple ID.

  5. Link to Apple ID

The AirTag syncs automatically across every device signed into the same Apple ID once registration completes.

  6. Attach to Item

Secure the AirTag to whatever you want to track using a compatible holder, and check the attachment is solid before relying on it.

Common Questions

Can I use an AirTag with an Android phone?

Not to own and track one. Setup requires an iPhone or iPad, and Apple states this directly, but the dependency runs deeper: tracking happens in the Find My app, which exists only on Apple platforms, and there is no Android app that lets you own an AirTag. If your household runs on Android, or if you are buying these as a gift for someone who does, this is the wrong product and no workaround changes that. An Android phone can still tap a found AirTag over NFC to read the owner's contact message.

How do I attach it to my keys?

You buy a holder, because there is not one in the box. An AirTag is a smooth disc with no hole, no loop and no clip, so there is no way to attach it to anything as supplied. Keys need a key ring holder, a bag needs a loop, a bicycle needs a mount, a pet collar needs a collar holder. Apple sells its own and there is a large third-party market for less, but budget for four of them alongside a four-pack or you will have four tags and nothing to attach them to.

Is the CR2032 battery a danger to small children?

Yes, and it needs stating plainly, because AirTags end up exactly where small children reach: on keys, in bags, on pushchairs, on toys. A swallowed button battery is a medical emergency rather than a wait-and-see situation, since it can generate a current that causes severe internal burns, and it can be fatal. Apple's design helps by requiring a deliberate press-and-twist a young child cannot easily perform, and some replacement cells carry a bitterant coating. Keep loose cells locked away, check the back is twisted fully home after a change, and if you ever suspect a child has swallowed one, go to an emergency department immediately rather than waiting for symptoms.

Will it work if I lose something in the countryside?

Less well, and the reason is the network rather than the tag. In a city, a train station, an airport or a shopping centre, Apple devices are dense and a lost item updates its position quickly, which is where AirTag is at its strongest. In a remote area, or even a quiet residential street, updates can be much slower or absent entirely, because there is nobody passing to report it.

What is Precision Finding and does my iPhone have it?

It is the close-range half of the system, and it uses Ultra Wideband radio to give you a distance and a direction arrow that walks you right up to the tag, turning a vague sense of the right room into the exact cushion it is under. Apple is careful to say this works on select iPhone models, and that is a real limitation: older phones without the Ultra Wideband chip fall back to playing a sound on the tag's built-in speaker, which works but is slower.

Could someone use one of these to track me?

Apple has built in protections and they are worth knowing about. An AirTag separated from its owner and travelling with someone else will alert that person's iPhone, and will eventually play a sound by itself. Android users are not left out either: Apple publishes a Tracker Detect app, and modern Android versions include unwanted-tracker alerts of their own. If you receive such an alert, take it seriously and follow the on-screen instructions to identify and disable the tag.

The Verdict

4.8Out of 5
Editor's Choice

The Apple AirTag 4 Pack sets a high bar for consumer item tracking through Ultra Wideband Precision Finding, a Find My network built from hundreds of millions of Apple devices, and iOS integration that makes setup close to a formality. It asks Apple households to buy their own attachment accessories separately and shuts Android users out entirely, its location updates are only as quick as the Apple devices around it, and its anti-stalking protections mean it isn't built for tracking anything you don't own. For iPhone owners juggling keys, wallets, luggage and other easily misplaced items, it delivers dependable finding, wide network coverage and a battery that lasts over a year without a subscription, which makes it the easy recommendation despite the platform exclusivity.

Who should buy it

  • iPhone owners who keep losing keys
  • Frequent travelers who want reliable luggage tracking through the Find My network, with automatic Lost Mode alerts and IP67 water resistance
  • Apple households with up to five people sharing tracking access for items everyone uses, like car keys or a shared bag
  • Buyers who value long-term cost, since the battery is replaceable and there is no subscription fee unlike some competing trackers
  • Privacy-conscious buyers who prefer Apple's anonymous, encrypted Find My network over trackers that handle location data more centrally

The AirTag 4 Pack earns its place for Apple users through dependable Precision Finding, wide Find My network coverage and seamless iOS integration. Holder costs and iOS exclusivity limit its appeal outside Apple households, but iPhone owners get a well-made tracker with over a year of battery life per cell, IP67 durability and no subscription fees. The four-pack suits anyone managing several items at once, though Android users and mixed-device households are better served by a cross-platform tracker instead.
