TL;DRThe Short Answer: Is the Athlon Optics 8x42 Midas UHD Gray Binoculars Worth It?

Cheap binoculars usually make you choose between price and clear glass. The Athlon Optics 8x42 Midas UHD tries to close that gap: ED glass and a dielectric-coated prism aim for a bright, sharp image, wrapped in a waterproof, magnesium body. Clarity and value are the standouts, and the one real niggle is front lens caps that can come loose too easily. It suits birders and hunters who want genuinely sharp optics without buying into the priciest tier.

NoFussDeal rates the Athlon Optics 8x42 Midas UHD Gray Binoculars 4.8 out of 5 at $198.99. Last updated September 26, 2026.

What Stands Out

  1. 8x magnification with 42mm ED glass objective lenses for a 426-foot field of view at 1000 yards
  2. ESP dielectric prism coating reflects over 99% of incoming light, paired with fully multi-coated lenses for brightness and color accuracy
  3. Waterproof, argon-purged roof prism housing built around a magnesium chassis
  4. 17.2mm of eye relief, long enough to keep the full view while wearing glasses

Strengths and Drawbacks

What works

  • ED glass cuts down chromatic fringing, giving a clean, accurate image on high-contrast subjects like backlit branches.
  • The ESP dielectric coating and fully multi-coated lenses make for a noticeably brighter image in low light, including dawn and dusk.
  • The waterproof, argon-purged housing is built to resist internal fogging through wet weather and temperature swings.
  • 17.2mm of eye relief means eyeglass wearers still get the full field of view rather than a cropped picture.
  • The magnesium chassis feels solid and well built without adding excessive weight.
  • Athlon backs the pair with a lifetime transferable warranty.
  • A close focus of about 6.5 feet makes it useful for nearby subjects like butterflies and flowers, not just distant wildlife.

What does not

  • At 1.6 pounds, it's not the lightest pair available, and some may notice the extra weight on long outings.
  • 8x magnification favors a steady, bright view over reach, so distant spotting across open water or fields may call for a 10x pair.
  • The included case is soft-sided rather than hard, so it offers limited protection against knocks in a packed bag.
  • The front lens caps aren't tethered and can come loose and fall off, so they're easy to lose.

Features in Depth

ED Glass Optical System for Reduced Color Fringing

Objective Lens 42mm ED glass Magnification 8x Relative Brightness 27.56

Athlon builds the Midas UHD around ED (extra-low dispersion) glass, which cuts down the color fringing that shows up along high-contrast edges with ordinary glass elements, for a sharper, more accurate image. The 42mm objective lenses pair with 8x magnification, and Athlon rates relative brightness at 27.56 for this combination, a way to compare brightness against other binoculars with different lens and magnification pairings. The payoff is a sharp, clear image with bright, saturated color that sits noticeably above cheaper pairs.

02

ESP Dielectric Coating and Fully Multi-Coated Lenses

Prism Coating ESP Dielectric, reflects over 99% of light Lens Coating Fully Multi-Coated Exit Pupil 5.25mm

The prism carries an ESP dielectric coating that Athlon says reflects over 99% of incoming light, working alongside fully multi-coated lenses that apply anti-reflective layers across every glass surface rather than just the outer lens. Together they aim for a brighter, more color-accurate image, particularly in low light. In use the image stays bright and the color saturated, and it holds up well as the light fades.

03

Argon-Purged Roof Prism Housing

Prism Type Roof Prism Housing Argon-purged, waterproof Enclosure Material Magnesium

The roof prism design gives a compact, in-line body instead of the bulkier offset shape of older porro-prism binoculars. Athlon purges the housing with argon gas, which the brand says improves waterproofing and thermal stability by keeping moisture out and helping prevent internal fogging when temperatures swing. The enclosure itself is magnesium, and Athlon backs the pair with a lifetime transferable warranty.

Eye Relief, Weight, and Field of View for Everyday Handling

Eye Relief 17.2mm Weight 1.6 pounds Field of View 426 ft at 1000 yards

Eye relief is 17.2 millimeters, the distance your eye can sit back from the eyepiece while still seeing the full field of view. Athlon frames that as particularly useful for eyeglass wearers, since glasses hold your eye farther from the lens and can otherwise crop the picture. At 1.6 pounds with a 426-foot field of view at 1000 yards, the pair balances a wide, bright view against a weight that's easy to carry for a full day outdoors.

Setting It Up

  1. Adjust Interpupillary Distance

Hold both barrels and bend the central hinge until the two views merge into one circular image. The distance between eyepieces adjusts to fit different faces, from about 57 to 74 millimeters apart.

  2. Set Eye Relief for Eyeglasses

If you wear glasses, retract the eyecups; if not, extend them so you get the full 17.2mm of eye relief and see the entire field of view either way.

  3. Focus and Calibrate Diopter

Close one eye and use the center focus wheel to sharpen the image for the open eye on a distant subject, then close that eye and use the individual diopter ring, adjustable plus or minus 3, to sharpen the other eyepiece. Once set, the two sides stay in sync as you use the center wheel from then on.

  4. Practice Center Focus Operation

Get familiar with the focus wheel's range, from a close focus of about 6.5 feet out to infinity, so you can move quickly between near and distant subjects in the field.

  5. Attach the Neck Strap

Thread the included neck strap through the attachment points on each barrel to carry the 1.6-pound pair comfortably.

  6. Use the Lens Covers and Case

Fit the included lens caps over the 42mm objective lenses when not in use, and store the pair in the included soft-sided case to protect the coatings and prism.

Common Questions

What do the ED glass and coatings actually do for the image?

The ED (extra-low dispersion) glass cuts down chromatic fringing, the colored halo ordinary lenses can show along high-contrast edges, for a cleaner, more accurate image. Athlon pairs that with an ESP dielectric coating on the prism that reflects over 99% of incoming light, plus fully multi-coated lenses across the optical path for better light transmission and truer color. The 42mm objective lens and 8x magnification combine for a 5.25mm exit pupil, the figure that most directly governs brightness in low light.

Are these binoculars waterproof and fog-proof?

Yes, Athlon rates the housing as waterproof, and it's argon purged, which the brand says improves waterproofing and thermal stability. Argon purging replaces the internal air with dry gas before sealing the housing, so there's little residual moisture inside to fog up when temperatures change. That covers internal fogging specifically; condensation forming on the outside lens surfaces in humid weather is a separate, ordinary occurrence that argon purging doesn't prevent. The enclosure itself is magnesium, supporting the sealed design.

I wear glasses. Will I be able to see the full field of view?

Yes: eye relief is 17.2 millimeters, and Athlon specifically frames long eye relief as important for eyeglass wearers, since glasses hold your eye farther back from the eyepiece than unaided viewing does. Without enough eye relief, a glasses wearer typically sees a cropped, vignetted picture rather than the full frame. Each eyepiece also has its own diopter adjustment of plus or minus 3, letting you tune the two sides independently before using the shared focus wheel.

How does it perform in real use, and are there any weak spots?

Quality, clarity, value, weight and focus are all strengths. The image is sharp and bright, with edge-to-edge clarity that can hold its own against far pricier pairs, and focus is quick to dial in. The main design drawback is the front lens caps, which aren't secured and can come loose and fall off within the first week of use.

Will the fit adjust to different faces?

Yes. The two barrels pivot around a center hinge so you can widen or narrow the distance between the eyepieces to match your own eyes, and each eyepiece has independent diopter adjustment to correct for uneven eyesight between your two eyes.

What is included in the box, and is there a warranty?

The box includes the binoculars, a cleaning cloth, lens caps, a padded neck strap and a soft-sided carrying case. Athlon backs the pair with a lifetime transferable warranty, and it ships as a single unit.

The Verdict

4.8Out of 5
Editor's Choice

The Athlon Optics 8x42 Midas UHD earns its place through real optical quality rather than marketing gloss. ED glass and a dielectric-coated prism deliver a genuinely sharp, bright image, and the waterproof, argon-purged, magnesium-built housing holds up to regular outdoor use. Clarity and value are its standout strengths, and the weak points are minor, chiefly front lens caps that can come loose.

Who should buy it

  • Serious birders and wildlife watchers
  • Hunters who need a bright, sharp image at dawn and dusk when light is limited
  • Outdoor enthusiasts who want a genuinely waterproof, fog-resistant pair for hiking, boating or backcountry trips
  • Eyeglass wearers who need enough eye relief to see the full field of view without cropping

ED glass, a dielectric-coated prism and a waterproof magnesium housing make a real case for image quality over ultralight portability, and the view through them backs that up.
