Brentwood Automatic Can Opener Review: Helpful Tall-Can Opener With Uneven Reliability

Brentwood's J-30B Automatic Can Opener is a tall electric opener that also carries a ceramic knife sharpener and a bottle opener, with a removable cutting lever for cleaning and a cord that tucks into the base. It is aimed at kitchens where a manual opener is a struggle, and for many it does exactly that job. The catch is consistency: a real share of owners find it cuts cleanly every time, while others find it will not go all the way round the can.

TL;DRThe Short Answer: Is the Brentwood J-30B Can Opener Worth It?

When it cuts cleanly, this tall electric opener takes the grip and twist out of opening cans, but a sizeable minority find it will not go all the way round. Auto pierce and shut-off do the work, the tall body clears big cans, and a removable lever makes the blade easy to clean. Buy it for weak or sore hands if you can test it in the return window; skip it if you need an opener that never misses.

NoFussDeal rates the Brentwood J-30B Can Opener 4.1 out of 5 at $24.25. Last updated September 27, 2026.

What Stands Out

  1. Three tools in one: electric can opener, knife sharpener and bottle opener.

Strengths and Drawbacks

What works

  • Takes the grip and twist out of opening cans, a real help for arthritic or weak hands.
  • The extra tall body opens tall cans as well as regular ones.
  • Auto pierce and shut-off mean no holding a button through the cut.
  • The cutting lever lifts off so the blade can be washed properly.
  • A knife sharpener and bottle opener are built in, and the cord stores in the base.
  • Holds up to rough family use.

What does not

  • Effectiveness splits evenly, and one owner found it would not cut all the way around.

  • Noise splits opinion, and some find it louder than other can openers.
  • One owner found the manufacturer unhelpful once the return window had passed.
  • The sharpener suits plain-edge knives only.

Features in Depth

01

Automatic Tall-Can Cutting

Operation Automatic Cutting Auto pierce and shut-off Blade Stainless steel

The J-30B uses auto pierce and automatic shut-off: set the can under the cutter and engage the lever, and the opener pierces the lid, runs the can round and stops when it is done. An extra tall body gives large cans room under the cutter, and Brentwood says it opens any size can on the first try. Many kitchens find it does exactly that, opening regular and tall cans quickly, and one owner rates it highly for taller cans as well as standard ones. The record is not clean, though. Effectiveness splits almost down the middle, and one owner found it would not cut all the way around. With lever openers, a dented rim, a can that tilts as it turns or a heavy can pulling away from the drive gear are the usual causes, so steady tall and heavy cans with a hand while they turn. If cuts still stop short on undamaged cans, return it within the window rather than hoping it improves.

Magnetic Lid Holder

Lid Holder Magnetic, per Brentwood Check On first use Workaround Lid lifter or tongs

Brentwood describes a magnetic lid holder that grips the lid as the cut finishes so it does not fall into the food. It is a small feature that makes a big difference in daily use: without it, a lid drops into the can and has to be fished out with a fork, which is fiddly and a common source of cut fingers. One owner, who otherwise found the opener works great, had exactly that problem and wished it had a magnet, because theirs did not grip the lid at all. It is not clear whether that unit was missing the magnet or simply had a weak one, but it is the first thing to check when the box arrives. Open one can over the sink and see whether the lid stays with the opener. If it drops, a magnetic lid lifter or a pair of tongs is a cheap workaround, but it is also a fair reason to exchange the unit.

Knife Sharpener and Bottle Opener

Sharpener Manual ceramic Knife Type Plain edge Bottle Opener Built in

The J-30B is a 3-in-1 tool, which is part of how it earns a place on the counter. A built-in manual ceramic sharpener sits in the body for quick touch-ups on plain-edge knives. Ceramic sharpeners hone rather than grind, so they realign and lightly refresh an edge that has gone dull with use; a badly chipped or very blunt knife needs a coarser stone. Draw the knife through with light, even strokes, the same number on each side, and never use it on serrated blades, which a slot sharpener will damage. The bottle opener is built into the body too, placed where it can be used without moving the machine. Neither extra changes the case for the opener itself, but together they save a drawer tool or two, and Brentwood pitches the combined design as a way to save counter space.

Cleaning, Noise, Cord and Warranty

Cleaning Removable lever Cord 3 foot, stores in base Warranty 1 year

The cutting lever lifts off in one movement, so the blade assembly, the part that touches the food, can be washed properly rather than wiped around. That is worth doing after anything oily or sugary, since residue on the cutting wheel is a common reason lever openers start to slip. The body is plastic and should only be wiped. Noise is mixed: one owner calls it low noise while another rates it highly but finds it louder than other can openers, and noise is one of the three things opinion divides on. The 3 foot cord stores in the base, which keeps the counter tidy, and one family that is rough on kitchen gadgets has bought a second after damaging the cord themselves. Brentwood covers it with a 1 year warranty. One owner found the manufacturer unhelpful after the return period, so keep the receipt and test early.

How we score
We score each thing that comes up most in owner feedback on the Brentwood Automatic Can Opener. Three things come up most in owner feedback: three split opinion. Its ratings average 4.1 stars (62% five stars, 13% four, 11% three and 14% one or two), so every score starts at 82, that average on a 100 point scale. Where opinion is split, we take off 6. Where it draws mostly complaints, we take off 12. Then we read eight owner reviews in full, including the critical ones, and move the score up to 5 points either way depending on how the owners who mention it rated the product. Our overall score starts from the same 4.1 star average and loses 0.1 for each thing that draws mostly complaints, with 0.1 more when at least a tenth of ratings are one star, never more than 0.3 in all. Nothing comes off here, so it stays at 4.1. Read our editorial standards

What Buyers Say

This is a genuinely split opener. Plenty of kitchens find it fast and easy, and it has made a real difference for one owner's mother, whose arthritis stopped her opening cans by hand. It handles tall cans as well as regular ones and holds up to rough family use. The other side is just as clear: how well it opens cans is evenly divided, with some calling it great and others the worst thing they have bought, and one owner found it would not cut all the way around. Noise splits opinion too, from quiet to noticeably loud.

Durable

Easy to use and holds up well to teenagers abuse. This is our second time purchasing this can opener due to an unfortunate accident with the cord (our fault). Definitely recommend

Great, but noisey, can opener

Setting It Up

  1. Check it on arrival

Unpack it, look for the magnet on the lid holder, and wash the removable cutting lever before first use. Then open a few different cans over the sink while you are still inside the return window.

  2. Position the can

Plug in, then raise the lever and set the can's rim under the cutting wheel so the rim sits against the drive gear. Check the rim is not dented where it meets the cutter.

  3. Engage the lever

Press the lever down to pierce the lid. The opener turns the can on its own and shuts off when the cut is complete.

  4. Support heavy or tall cans

Rest a hand lightly under a tall or heavy can as it turns so it does not tilt or pull away from the gear, which is a common cause of cuts that stop short.

  5. Lift off the can and lid

Hold the can, raise the lever and lift the lid away from the magnet carefully, since the cut edge is sharp. Use tongs or a lid lifter if the lid drops into the can.

Common Questions

Does the Brentwood J-30B open tall cans?

Yes. The extra tall body gives large cans room under the cutter, and it handles tall cans as well as regular ones. Support heavy cans with a hand while they turn.

Why does it stop before cutting all the way around?

One owner had exactly that problem. Dented rims, a can tilting as it turns, or residue on the cutting wheel are common causes with lever openers. If it happens on undamaged cans after cleaning, return it.

Does it have a magnet to hold the lid?

Brentwood describes a magnetic lid holder, but one owner found theirs did not hold the lid. Check for the magnet as soon as you unpack it.

Is it loud?

Opinion is split. Some find it quiet, while others find it noisier than other can openers.

Can the sharpener do serrated knives?

No. The built-in manual ceramic sharpener is for plain-edge knives only.

How do I clean it?

Unplug it, lift off the one-touch cutting lever and wash the blade assembly. Wipe the plastic body with a damp cloth and never put it in water.

The Verdict

4.1Out of 5

Brentwood's J-30B does a valuable job when it works. Automatic piercing and cutting take the grip and twist out of opening cans, which has made a real difference for one owner's arthritic mother, and the extra tall body handles large cans as well as regular ones. A removable cutting lever keeps the blade clean, and a ceramic knife sharpener, a bottle opener and a stored cord round it out. The trouble is reliability. How well it opens cans splits almost evenly, one owner found it would not cut all the way around, and another found no working magnet to hold the lid. Noise splits opinion as well. For sore hands and tall cans it is worth trying, but only if you test it on several cans straight away and keep the receipt.

Who should buy it

  • People with sore hands
  • Kitchens that open a lot of tall or large cans.
  • Anyone who wants a sharpener and bottle opener on the same appliance.
  • Buyers who will test it thoroughly inside the return window.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone who needs an opener that never stops short of a full cut.
  • Early risers who want a quiet appliance.
  • Buyers who will not have time to test it before the return window closes.

A tall, easy electric opener with useful extras, let down by uneven cutting; buy it only if you can test it early.
