TL;DRThe Short Answer: Is the Kitchen Mama Electric Can Opener Worth It?

For someone with arthritis or a weak grip, a tin of chickpeas can be the hardest thing in the kitchen to open. This small battery opener takes both the grip and the sharp edge out of the job, and for that buyer it is worth having. It is easy to use and leaves clean edges every time. The catch is reliability: a unit can manage two years of near-daily use, but some stop working far sooner, so buy it with the return window in mind.

NoFussDeal rates the Kitchen Mama Electric Can Opener 3.9 out of 5 at $29.99. Last updated September 27, 2026.

What Stands Out

  1. Sits on top of the can and cuts around it at the press of a button, with no squeezing or turning
  2. Stainless steel blade cuts along the side of the can, leaving smooth edges on both lid and can
  3. Battery operated and cordless, so it works anywhere from a small kitchen to a campsite
  4. Light and compact at 8.48 ounces and 2.76 by 7 inches, small enough for a kitchen drawer

Strengths and Drawbacks

What works

  • True hands-free operation: set it on the can and press one button, with no squeezing or turning
  • Light and compact at 8.48 ounces, small enough to store in a kitchen drawer
  • Smooth edges on both the lid and the can, its clearest strength
  • Magnet lifts the lid away with the opener, so there is no sharp-edged lid to fish out
  • Battery operated and cordless, useful in small kitchens, caravans and at a campsite
  • Lets people with arthritis or injured hands open cans on their own again

What does not

  • Reliability and durability are the weak points, with some units failing within weeks
  • It does not stop on its own; you have to press the button again once the lid is free
  • Can be a little loud
  • Now and then a can may not open fully and needs a second pass

Side-Cutting: the Reason This Product Exists

Blade Material Stainless Steel Material ABS Plastic Power Battery operated, cordless

The mechanism is the genuinely good idea here, and it is worth understanding because it is the one thing this device does that a basic manual opener cannot. A traditional opener cuts down through the lid, inside the rim. That leaves two hazards: a loose lid with a sharp edge all the way round, and a can whose rim is now a ring of cut metal. Those are exactly what makes opening a can risky for someone with reduced grip, poor eyesight or thin skin. Kitchen Mama's stainless steel blade cuts along the side of the can instead, so the lid comes away whole and both lid and can are smooth to handle. The lack of sharp edges is its clearest win. The second half of the idea is that it is hands-free: you sit it on the can, press once, and it drives itself around the rim. For a buyer with arthritis or limited hand strength, a device that removes both the gripping force and the sharp edge from the job is assistive equipment rather than a gadget.

02

The Reliability Problem, Stated Plainly

Reliability Inconsistent Durability The weak point Ease of Use Very easy

Build quality on this opener is inconsistent, and it would be dishonest to bury that. Many units work well and open cans smoothly; others do not work at all, or stop working within a couple of weeks, and some break after around six months. Reliability and durability are the clear weak points, and cutting performance and value for money hinge on which unit you get. Set against that, ease of use and the smooth edges are consistently good, and a unit can still be working almost daily after two years. If yours fails outside the return period, the seller may still help put it right, which is worth knowing. The honest reading is a device with a genuinely good design and inconsistent build quality: use it on plenty of cans in the first weeks so any fault shows up while you can still return it.

How It Works in Practice

Model Number CO1100-R Included Components Can opener, instruction manual Item Highlight Automatic, Hands Free, Smooth Edge

Operation is as simple as Kitchen Mama says, with one important difference from what you might expect: it does not switch itself off. You place it on top of the can, slide it so the cutting edge sits at the rim, and press the button; it lines itself up and cuts around the can. Once the lid is free it keeps circling until you press the button again, and the sound changes when the cut is complete, which is the cue to stop it. Pressing that button while it is still moving can be awkward, which matters if your hands are very weak. When you lift the opener away, a magnet on the underside takes the lid with it. If a cut is left incomplete, setting the opener back on the uncut section finishes the job. The body is ABS plastic around a stainless steel blade, and because it runs on AA batteries rather than mains power it works on a caravan table, a campsite or a worktop with no free socket.

Who Should Buy This, and Who Should Not

Value for Money Depends on your hands Item Weight 8.48 ounces Brand Kitchen Mama

The verdict here turns almost entirely on who you are, which makes the recommendation clearer rather than vaguer. If opening a can is genuinely difficult or unsafe for you, through arthritis, a weak grip, a tremor or a hand injury, then the calculation is not really about reliability. A device that removes both the grip strength and the sharp edge from the job is worth trying even with uneven build quality, because the alternative is struggling or relying on someone else. People in exactly that position get the most from it. If you are simply buying a convenience for a household where everyone can use a manual opener comfortably, the case is much weaker: a good manual opener has nothing to fail and needs no batteries, and the smooth-edge benefit, while real, is a convenience rather than a necessity. Value for money splits along the same line.

How We Scored It

Based on
The manufacturer's published specifications and the product's live Amazon listing.
Owner rating
4.2 out of 5 on Amazon, recorded September 27, 2026
How we score
We score each thing that comes up most in owner feedback on the Kitchen Mama Auto Electric Can Opener. Eight things come up most in owner feedback: two draw praise, four split opinion and two draw mostly complaints. Its ratings average 4.2 stars (67% five stars, 14% four, 6% three and 13% one or two), so every score starts at 84, that average on a 100 point scale. Where opinion is split, we take off 6. Where it draws mostly complaints, we take off 12. Then we read ten owner reviews in full (every one we found gave it four or five stars) and move the score up to 5 points either way depending on how the owners who mention it rated the product. Our overall score starts from the same 4.2 star average and loses 0.1 for each thing that draws mostly complaints, with 0.1 more when at least a tenth of ratings are one star, never more than 0.3 in all. Here that takes off 0.3, which gives 3.9. Read our editorial standards

Setting It Up

  1. Install Batteries

Fit fresh AA batteries in the battery compartment, matching the polarity marks. Someone with injured wrists may need help with this first step, so if you are buying for someone else, fit the batteries before you hand it over.

  2. Position the Opener

Stand the can upright on a steady surface and set the opener on top of it, with the cutting edge at the rim. Slide it to the edge of the lid; it lines itself up once it starts.

  3. Press the Button to Start

Press the button once. The opener grips the rim and drives itself around the can while the blade cuts along the side. There is nothing to hold or turn while it works.

  4. Listen, Then Press Again to Stop

The opener does not switch itself off. Once the lid is cut free the sound changes, and that is the moment to press the button again to stop it. Stopping promptly avoids unnecessary extra turns around the rim.

  5. Remove the Lid

Lift the opener straight up. A magnet on the underside lifts the lid with it, and both the lid and the can are left with smooth edges. Wipe the opener clean before putting it away.

Common Questions

Mine stopped working after two weeks. Is it broken?

Check the batteries first, because a motorised opener asks a lot of them and weak cells are the simplest explanation for an opener that slows, stalls or will not start. Fit a fresh set and try again. If it still will not run, it may well be a genuine fault: some units do stop working within weeks, and reliability is this opener's biggest weakness. Contact the seller even if you are outside the return period; the seller may still be willing to put it right.

What batteries should I use?

Fresh AA batteries. A set can last 30 to 40 uses, though that will vary with the cans you open and the batteries you choose. When the opener starts to slow or stall partway round a can, change the batteries before concluding anything else, and take them out if the opener will sit unused for a long spell so they cannot leak.

Does it leave sharp edges?

No, and this is the main reason to own one. The stainless steel blade cuts along the side of the can rather than down through the lid, so the lid comes away whole and neither it nor the can is left with a sharp cut edge. Smooth edges are its clearest strength, and it is simple enough for a 12-year-old to use with no risk of a cut.

Will it open dented or very large cans?

It is built for everyday kitchen cans, and it works on several sizes of can. Openers of this type follow the rim as they travel, so a badly dented rim is the most likely thing to stop it, and forcing it will not help. If a cut is left incomplete, setting the opener back on the uncut section and running it again finishes the job.

Is it a good gift for an elderly relative?

It can be, and it is the use Kitchen Mama designs it for. Someone in their late seventies with painful arthritis, or recovering from two broken wrists, is exactly who it helps most. Set it up first: fit the batteries, which weak or injured hands may need help with, open several cans yourself, and show them that it keeps running until the button is pressed again. Because reliability is uneven, keep the receipt, since the person most likely to need it is also the person least likely to chase a return.

How should I clean it?

Wipe the blade area, underside and magnet clean after use, and never put the body in water or the dishwasher, since it runs on batteries. A disinfecting wipe does the job. Keeping food residue off the underside also keeps the magnet lifting lids reliably.

The Verdict

3.9Out of 5

The Kitchen Mama Auto Electric Can Opener does one thing a manual opener cannot: it takes both the grip and the sharp edge out of opening a can. The stainless steel blade cuts along the side, the magnet lifts the lid away, and for arthritic or injured hands it can give back a small piece of independence. Ease of use and smooth edges are its most consistent strengths. The reservations are real, though. Reliability and durability are the weak points, with some units failing within weeks or months even though others manage two years of near-daily use, and it does not stop itself, so you press the button again once the lid is free. For anyone who struggles with a manual opener, it is well worth buying; open plenty of cans with it early so any fault shows up inside the return window. For everyone else, a good manual opener is the safer bet.

Who should buy it

  • People with arthritis or a weak grip
  • Anyone buying for an older relative who wants to keep cooking independently, provided the batteries are fitted and it is tried first
  • Caravan, camping and small-kitchen users who want a cordless opener that stores in a drawer
  • Households that value smooth, safe edges on lids and cans, especially with children helping in the kitchen

For anyone who struggles to open a can, the Kitchen Mama is a genuine help: hands-free, compact and free of sharp edges. Reliability is uneven, so test it thoroughly while you can still return it, and if your hands are fine, a good manual opener remains the dependable choice.
