Where a Steam Mop Genuinely Excels
Steam cleaning works by delivering hot water vapour that condenses on contact with the floor, and where that is genuinely excellent is sealed hard surfaces: ceramic and porcelain tile, sealed stone, vinyl and linoleum. On those it does something a conventional mop cannot, lifting grease and ground-in dirt with heat rather than detergent and leaving no residue behind to dull the surface over time. It is genuinely effective at exactly that work: old, grimy kitchen floors can come back to their original colour. The important qualification concerns wood and laminate, which PurSteam markets it for and which carry a real risk, covered in the questions below, because it is the one thing that can cost you a floor rather than a disappointing clean. Grout is a partial win: a pass with the mop can improve grout without fully cleaning it, and working the lines with the grout brush attachment tends to do better.
